This, my third newsletter, comes to you very late!
I know it’s already March, but let us cast our memory back to the fall of last year, for that is the time which I will be updating you on presently. Life gets in the way, and I’m still not used to having a newsletter, so I have put it off for a while.
Regardless, I got a lot of work done at the end of last year that I’d love to share!

New Work

Last trimester at the Florence Academy of Art was extremely fruitful. I spent the full 10 weeks on a single sculpture, a 3/4 scale female figure, in a reclining pose. Both the new scale and the very strange pose was extremely challenging to grasp, but in the end I hope I made a successful work.
That, along with new drawings and a quick Plein air painting, made for a productive term!

As the commitment to my sculpture is growing more demanding, I only had time to make one painting during the this term. But, here it is!

And as normal during one trimester at FAA, two new drawings, each done over the course of 5-weeks.

Mold-making Process

In the final, 11th, week of the trimester I made a mold of my sculpture, an elaborate process, both time consuming and grueling! We start by applying a liquid silicone layer which is very thin and captures all the detail of the sculpture. Then, a second layer of a putty silicone to add thickness and strength. Finally, a mother-mold, which is a hard shell that surrounds the whole thing and helps the silicone hold its shape. This must be done in several parts which all bolt together. I made mine with resin and fiberglass sheets, but plaster and burlap is possible too.

Figurative Sculpture Invitational

In December I traveled back home to Indiana for Christmas and had the opportunity to visit my own work in two exhibitions! I am honored to have shown my work in the Figurative Sculpture Invitational put on by the National Sculpture Society. It was in Indianapolis at the Herron School of Art + Design, my alma mater.

45th Elkhart Juried Regional

I am also very honored to have shown a piece in the 45th Elkhart Juried Regional, a group exhibition through the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana. It’s a juried exhibition with selected artists from Indiana and Michigan.
